Upward Bound Math and Science

Proudly presents:  Math and Science in Music

Thursday Evening, December 5, 2013

Marian University Stayer Dining Room, 6:00 - 7:00 PM

(Required Event)
UBMS students, families and friends, will be treated to the musical talent of Arpad Muranyi.  Arpad has received his Performance Artist and Pedagogy degree in cello performance from the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, Budapest, Hungary in 1981 and his Master of Music degree in cello performance from Florida State University, Tallahassee. After completing his coursework for his doctoral degree at Boston University, he joined the Sacramento Symphony Orchestra in 1989.  While working in the orchestra, Arpad returned to school and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Electronic Engineering.  From 1991 to 2007 Arpad worked as a signal integrity engineer at Intel Corporation and currently is a principal engineer for Mentor Graphics Corporation.

Composing and hearing music has led to musical applications of set theory, abstract algebra, and number theory.  Rhythm, numbers, counting, scale, and measurement are all important mathemtatical aspects of music.  The physics in music and musical instruments include pitch, echo, sound travel and sound waves.

A goal of the UBMS program is to continously expose our students to a variety of careers that use math and science in their daily jobs. Whether the programs connect students with career interests or not, everyone should be able to appreciate the importance of math and science is almost any career.

Families are welcome to attend.  Students are required to attend and asked to RSVP to this event via this link:  https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1XAX4mhTVcV-xrAwSfmT7ms9KPgX3tcUQQEOGezHhzMc/viewform

To get us in the holiday spirit, students are asked to bring a plate of of their family's favorite holiday cookies to share with the group this evening.  Hot apple cider will also be served.  We look forward to seeing you!
