Who are the Students Served by Upward Bound Programs

Upward Bound programs can be found all over the United States. They target high school students who are both potential first-generation college-goers and those who have limited-income when it comes to college planning. Here's why these programs focus on these groups:

  • Need-based:  Upward Bound is a federally funded program with the goal of increasing college access. Students from low-income backgrounds often face challenges affording college prep resources and navigating the application process. Upward Bound helps bridge this gap.
  • First-Generation Support:  First-generation students, meaning their parents haven't been to college, may not have the same familiarity with college applications, financial aid, or campus life. Upward Bound provides guidance and support specifically tailored to their needs.
  • Limited exposure to college: First-generation students may not have family members who can guide them through the college application process or give them a realistic idea of what college is like. Upward Bound provides them with mentors and advisors who can address these gaps.
  • Financial barriers: Student with limited financial resources may be discouraged from applying to college due to concerns about affordability. Upward Bound programs can typically help them navigate financial support options and scholarships.
  • Academic preparation: Upward Bound offers academic support to ensure students are prepared for the rigors of college coursework.

It's important to note that some Upward Bound programs may also serve students who meet one of these two criteria (limited-income or first-generation), though targeting both together is most common. Prioritizing those students allows the program to focus on those who might face the most significant obstacles on their
path to college.

Upward Bound isn't the only TRIO program (funded by the US Department of Education). There are other programs that serve different needs, so there may be resources available for students who don't meet Upward Bound's criteria. Overall, Upward Bound aims to level the playing field for these students and increase their chances of college success.
