During a recent recruitment presentation at one of our local schools, we received several insightful questions from students and parents eager to learn more about the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. We’re sharing our responses here on the blog in case other students or families have similar questions and are seeking the same clarity. As we continue to visit schools and connect with the community, we plan to publish additional posts like this one to keep everyone informed and supported throughout the application process.
1. Is summer programming mandatory?Participation in the summer academy is strongly preferred for various reasons. It is a very significant part of the overall UBMS experience. The summer programming allows students to engage in UBMS in more meaningful and beneficial ways. Some of the services and educational enrichment activities we offer—such as educational enrichment trips, hands-on research, project-based learning, college visits, and college-prep workshops—can only be provided during the summer. Additionally, our program has expanded its focus from STEM to STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics), incorporating creativity and innovation into learning. The summer academy is an essential opportunity for students to develop critical thinking skills, collaborate on projects, and gain valuable exposure to STEAM fields.
2. What if my parent(s) went to a four-year college, but I’m highly interested in participating? Can I still apply?
Yes! While UBMS primarily serves students who are first-generation college-bound (meaning neither parent has earned a four-year degree), we also consider students who meet other eligibility criteria, such as demonstrating a strong interest in STEAM fields or needing additional academic support. If you are passionate about science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics, and you are eager to engage in hands-on learning, we encourage you to apply! Additionally, once students are accepted into the program, we do not disclose to the public the specific criteria under which they qualify. This information is kept strictly confidential. If you’re unsure about your eligibility, we encourage your parent or guardian to contact a member of our team as soon as possible for clarification.
3. What if my family doesn’t qualify for the "low income" status? If I’m interested and highly motivated, can I still apply?
Absolutely! While UBMS gives priority to students whose families meet the federal financial qualifications, we also accept students who meet other eligibility criteria, such as being a first-generation college student or having a strong career interest in STEAM disciplines. Our program is designed for students who are motivated to explore STEAM careers, develop problem-solving skills, and prepare for college success.
If students feel enthusiastic about learning and can commit to
full participation in the program, we strongly encourage them to apply.
Furthermore, once a student is accepted into UBMS, we maintain confidentiality
regarding their eligibility status. No unauthorized person outside of program
staff will know under what criteria a student was admitted.
If students or their family members are unsure about
eligibility, we welcome parents or guardians to reach out to our team for
further guidance. However, spots tend to fill up quickly, so they should not
wait too long to apply.
