2023 UBMS Summer Academy - Notes for Parents of Rising 9th-12th Graders

Attention Fond du Lac area parents!

As the 2022-2023 school year comes to a close, we want to share an exciting opportunity with you and your child. The Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program is hosting its 11th edition of the summer academy from June 19 to July 18, 2023. The academy will be held at Marian University and is free for eligible students who meet the federal eligibility requirements.

As parents of rising 9th-12th grade students in the school districts of Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac, we wanted to reach out and highlight the top five (5) benefits your child can gain from participating in the UBMS summer academy as they prepare to transition to their high school journey:

  1. Academic Support - The summer academy provides hands-on learning experiences in math, science, technology, English composition, literature, and world languages.  Students will participate in projects and academic support workshops/seminars designed to help them prepare for high school coursework. .
  2. College Readiness - UBMS prepares students for college by providing workshops on college applications, financial aid, and other college-related topics. Students will also visit college campuses and participate in college fairs.
  3. Career Exploration - UBMS exposes students to a variety of careers, particularly in STEM/STEAM. Students will have the opportunity to visit multiple workplaces, hear from guest speakers from various fields, and participate in career-related activities.
  4. Personal Development - UBMS helps students develop important life skills, such as time management, goal setting, communication, social/emotional well-being, and self-advocacy. Students will also participate in leadership development and team-building activities.
  5. Community and Relationship-Building - UBMS provides a supportive community for students. Students will have the opportunity to meet other [current and future] high school peers from who share their interests and goals, as well as connect with UBMS staff and mentors.

We encourage you to discuss this opportunity with your child and encourage them to apply if they meet the federal eligibility requirements. Eligible students must be future first-generation college students, or from families who are economically-qualified, and enrolled in the school districts of Fond du Lac and North Fond du Lac. Space is limited, so we encourage you to submit and application as soon as possible.

If you have any questions about eligibility to the program, please don't hesitate to contact the UBMS team via email trio.ubms@marianuniversity.edu or via text message 920-266-9397. You may also contact the team to inquire about the program application process.

Thank you for your time and consideration. We hope to hear from your child soon!

Sincerely,

Team UBMS
